Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms that includes abdominal pain and changes in bowel movement patterns without any evidence of underlying damage. IBS is classified based on whether diarrhea, constipation, or both are common.
Disorders such as anxiety, major depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome are common among people with IBS. It is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, with symptoms such as weight loss and blood in the stool.
Symptoms of IBS
- Abdominal pain or discomfort, along with frequent changes in bowel movements.
- Urgency for bowel movements.
- Feeling of incomplete evacuation (tenesmus).
- Bloating or abdominal distension.
- Mucus in stools, which may be yellowish-white or clear.
- Common associated symptoms: gastroesophageal reflux, nausea, genitourinary symptoms, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, headaches, backaches, psychiatric symptoms such as depression and anxiety.
There is also mineral deficiency and anemia associated with IBS.
